Learn How to Size Your Bets

Importance of Poker Bet Sizes

The size of your bets in poker is very important. This episode focuses on bet sizing, starting with what makes a bet 'big', 'medium' or 'small'. That's determined by the amount of your bet relative to what is already in the pot.

The amount that you'll want to bet depends on your reason for making the bet. For example, are you betting big to protect your hand, or betting small to induce a bet from your opponent? A clip from the UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) shows the dangers of betting more than necessary.

In the poker jargon segment, we learn about certain types of bets. As you might know, to go 'all in' means betting all your chips – the biggest move you can make in No Limit Texas Hold'em. However, you've also got the option to make an 'overbet', 'underbet' or 'blocker bet'.

Next, we review a hand from the London stop of the European Poker Tour (EPT) involving poker pro Daniel Negreanu. This clip highlights the importance of bet sizing. Negreanu perceives weakness in his opponent's small bet sizes, and makes a big re-raise to win the pot, despite not having the best hand.

The episode concludes with top players discussing the psychological aspects of poker. World Series bracelet winner David Williams, Main Event champ Joe Hachem, Luca Pagano and former Olympian Fatima Moreira de Melo give their opinions on body language, table talk and other interactions during a game.
